BIRMINGHAM — An inmate at William Donaldson Correctional Facility was found dead while being treated for natural diseases on Tuesday, September 5.
The inmate, Sam Cox, 59, was serving a life sentence for murder from 1992 conviction out of Pike County.
Cox was found unresponsive by medical staff in the prison infirmary, where he was being treated for natural diseases. Jefferson County Chief Coroner Bill Yates described the natural diseases as significant.
A postmortem examination preformed by the Jefferson County Coroner’s office found no evidence of trauma or foul play.
The Alabama Department of Correction is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
