BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said police are investigating after finding an adult male who had been assaulted in the Huffman area. Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from injuries received during an assault. Fitzgerald said the Jefferson County Coroners Office will conduct an autopsy the determine the exact cause of death.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates identified the victim as David Wayne Nicholas, 43, of Birmingham and said he sustained a gunshot wound during an assault.
“We believe a suspect assaulted the victim at a residence in the 1400 Block of Lake Lane Northeast,” Fitzgerald said. “The victim was able to leave the residence and seek help in the neighborhood. The suspect is not in custody.”
Fitzgerald said police do not believe the incident is random.
