“Whereas all Trussville elementary and middle school students took the mandatory Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) exams,” Councilor Lisa Bright read, “in the subjects of English and Language Arts, Math and Science, during the 2023 academic year; and whereas one middle school student achieved a perfect score in science; and whereas five elementary and one middle school student achieved perfect scores in English and Language Arts; and whereas 24 elementary and two middle school students achieved perfect scores in Math; and whereas these 33 high achievers represent all city elementary schools and the middle school; Now, therefore, be it proclaimed by the mayor and the city council of Trussville that the city hereby congratulates the parents, teachers and principals of (these students).
Next, the council approved Proclamation 2024-02, honoring HTHS head varsity football coach Josh Floyd for being named the 7A Football Coach of the Year.
“This is a real treat for me; a real honor to get to recognize Coach Floyd, who means so much to our community, not only as a football coach, but as a person and in the way he leads our program in our school,” Councilor Alan Taylor said before reading the proclamation. “Whereas Hewitt-Trussville High School football coach Josh Floyd led the Huskies to the state semi-finals this past season for the first time since 1996; and whereas, during his decade-long tenure here, the Huskies, under Coach Floyd, have been in the playoff nine times, advancing to the state quarter finals a further seven times; and whereas, in recognition of the team’s accomplishment, the Alabama Football Coaches Association named Coach Floyd as its 7A Coach of the Year; … Now, therefore be it proclaimed by the mayor and city council of Trussville, Alabama, that the city of Trussville congratulates Coach Josh Floyd on his 2023 accomplishments. The city thanks Coach Floyd for all his contributions, past, present and future, to our school and our community.”
During the public comments portion of the meeting, John Griscom and Brent Goodwin with the American Legion Post 205 expressed their gratitude to the mayor and city council members for their support of Wreaths Across America 2023.
“This year was outstanding in that we were able to place over 1,500 wreaths over various cemeteries around the community,” Goodwin said. “We want to say a special, special thanks to the City of Trussville for helping us – the administration, the police and the fire – to make our ceremony out there and our placement of the wreaths for our veterans very successful.”
Mayor Buddy Choat said that the city of Trussville has been involved for several years now with Wreaths Across America, which takes place in December each year and, locally, places wreaths on veteran graves at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
“It’s really what Trussville wanted to do, to be a big part of that, as we did our memorial down in our Veteran’s Park,” Choat said. “So if any of you get a chance next year, if you haven’t been, it’s very rewarding to go. Gold Star families are there and we all get a chance to take a wreath and go put it on (a veteran’s grave).”
In other business, the council passed a resolution approving unpaid personal leave for a certain city employee.
