BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after a man shot at an Oporto Madrid Blvd. intersection died from his injuries. The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.
At approximately 1:15 p.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a Shot Spotter alert at 7701 5th Avenue North. Officers were updated that a person was shot inside a vehicle in the 500 Block of Oporto Madrid Boulevard North.
“Officers arrived on the scene when they observed the victim lying unresponsive inside a van,” Fitzgerald said. “He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.”
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and transported the victim to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Thursday. January 11, 2024, the victim succumbed to his injuries at UAB Hospital.
“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was inside his vehicle when an unknown vehicle pulled next to him at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and Oporto Madrid Boulevard North,” Fitzgerald said. “An unknown suspect or suspects fired shots into the victim’s vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle fled the scene.”
There is no one in custody.
