TRUSSVILLE – The feat was accomplished on December ninth but, due to holidays and all the busy-ness that comes with it, the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies were not able to celebrate with Coach Tonya Hunter and her team until this past Tuesday night, January 9th.
Tonya Hunter took over the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies girls basketball team before 2014-2015 season. The Huskies were coming off of a 16-12 season under previous coach Stu Stuedeman who coached for two years.
Hunter went 11-8 in her first season but the following season saw a 21-11 record and an area championship. At that point, the Huskies knew they had made the right choice with Tonya Hunter.
Since coming to Hewitt, Coach Hunter has won 210 games, losing only 78 during that time. On December 9th, the Huskies coach hit a milestone, winning her 200th game as the head coach at Hewitt Trussville, something no other Lady Husky coach has ever done.
“When we took the Hewitt-Trussville job 10 years ago, we knew it was going to be a special place where we could build a program,” said Coach Hunter. “I’m so happy that we can now look back and see that we get to celebrate 200 plus wins at HT but the most important part is that we experienced all those wins with the young ladies that poured themselves into our program and I’m forever grateful for that.”
On that night, Hunter’s Huskies beat Oxford 64-33 in a game that was close at the beginning but saw the Huskies pull away in the second half, scoring 40 of the 64 in the final two periods of the game.
She has done it all year, but it was fitting that Jordan Hunter, Tonya and Cedric’s daughter who is a member of the Lady Huskies team, led scoring in the game with 22 points.
Since that game, the Huskies have won 10 more games, making them 19-5 on the season. No surprise, the Lady Huskies also sit atop the 7A Area 6 rankings and are ranked in the top five in all state polls.
Winning 200 games in a career is quite a feat. Winning 200 games at one school in 10 seasons is something that is unheard of.
After their 210th win of the season, an 82-18 whipping of Oak Mountain this past Tuesday, Hewitt Trussville AD Lance Walker presented Coach Hunter with a plaque to commemorate her accomplishment.
