CHELSEA — Shelby County deputies answering a domestic call found themselves in a physical struggle with an armed man. The altercation left the man wounded, then jailed on attempted murder charges, according to a statement released Monday.
Officials said on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at approximately 11:29 a.m. on Saturday, Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a domestic incident on Brandy Circle in Chelsea.
“Upon arrival at the scene, deputies encountered 20-year-old Nicholas Tyler Hardin, of Chelsea, who was found concealing a pistol,” according to the statement from the SCSO. “Deputies attempted to disarm Hardin, at which time he became physically resistant and brandished a pistol immediately before being shot in the lower extremities.”
Officials said Hardin was then taken into custody, and transported by ambulance to a Birmingham area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
After release from the hospital, Hardin was transported to the Shelby County Jail where he was formally charged with two counts of attempted murder, first degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hardin remains in the Shelby County Jail with no bond for a previous criminal charge.
“I am grateful for the quick response of our patrol deputies, the 911 dispatchers, and the Chelsea Fire Department,” Sheriff John Samaniego said. “These first responders face immeasurable risks daily, but remain steadfast in their service to our communities.”
Samaniego requested the Shelby County Major Crimes Task Force, under the direction of the District Attorney’s Office, lead the investigation into the officer involved shooting.
