JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Jefferson County man has been charged with capital murder after a toddler with “bodily injuries” died on Friday, according to Lt. Joni Money of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office in the Bessemer Cutoff issued a warrant against Oscar Espinoza Guadarrama for the murder of 19-month-old Gabriel Adriel Alonso Romero.
“After reviewing the case submitted by Jefferson County Sheriff’s detectives, they determined there was sufficient evidence to issue a warrant for the charge of Capital Murder,” Money said.
Around 8:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the emergency room of UAB Medical Center West to investigate a child who had been brought in with multiple bodily injuries. The toddler was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
The child’s mother’s boyfriend, Guadarrama, 27, was later taken into custody and placed in the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer, according to Money. Guadarrama is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer without bond.
