BIRMINGHAM — A man was shot to death during a family barbecue in Birmingham on Wednesday, according to Sgt. Laquitta Wade of the Birmingham Police Department.
The victim has been identified as Willie Carr, 56, of Birmingham.
Wade said officers were responding to a call of a person shot in the 1100 block of Cotton Avenue SW at about 7:44 pm. when they found an adult male lying unresponsive on the floor inside a residence.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and pronounced the man dead.
According to Wade, the preliminary investigation suggested that family members were gathered together for a barbecue when a person also attending the gathering became angry.
That person then began firing shots and the victim was struck.
The suspect fled the scene by the time officers arrived, but is now in custody, according to police.
