PINSON — Heading into this weekend’s Bryant Bank Thanksgiving Classic at Hewitt-Trussville, Pinson Valley is not yet “firing on all cylinders,” said head coach Clint Argo.
Argo said his team, which is 1-2, has played hard but execution hasn’t been on point.
“We have struggled to find the offensive rhythm we need to score effectively,” Argo said. “We haven’t shot the ball well from the field or the free throw line.”
Pinson Valley lost its season opener at home to Clay-Chalkville, falling 65-59 in overtime. The Indians beat Shades Valley in overtime at home Nov. 18, winning 63-62. Pinson Valley’s most recent game was its worst, losing 75-33 at Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday.
Argo said that after winning its first area championship since 2002 last season but falling in the subregion game against Ramsay to finish with an 18-12 record, the team decided it had a good season. Four juniors from that team are back this season as seniors.
“At the beginning of the season I reminded the guys of our accomplishment last season,” Argo said. “I told them I expected to compete for the area championship again. If we said last year we were good, this year good isn’t good enough. We have to strive to be better than good. Good got us to the subregion game vs. Ramsay but being good didn’t give us a win in that game. Every day we have to work in practice to be better than good. If you are OK with being good, you are selling yourself short. I told them they needed to understand good isn’t good enough. We have yet to be better than good. It’s still a work in progress.”
