UPDATE: According to an announcement from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the injuries sustained by the 24-year-old female are not believed to be life-threatening.
“It is believed that the shooting is the result of an attempted robbery, as detectives located a paper bag containing cash near where the male victim was shot,” read an announcement from the sheriff’s office. “Witnesses state that a black male, wearing all black clothing, came from behind the apartments shooting at the male victim. The female victim was getting her child from her vehicle and was struck by gunfire. It is not believed that she was the target of the shooting.”
FAIRFIELD — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a double shooting at a Fairfield apartment complex. One of the victims has died.
Sgt. Joni Money said deputies were called to the scene in the 400 block of Fairfax Drive, around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2020. Upon arrival, deputies found two people had been shot at the Chateau Glen Apartments.
A 22-year-old male and a 24-year-old female were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates said the 22-year-old man, Devon Darien Johnson, of Midfield, died at UAB Hospital at 9:32 p.m.
No suspects are in custody but investigators have spoken to witnesses.
