WASHINGTON — Judge Amy Coney Barrett will now be Justice Amy Coney Barrett after a divided vote by the U.S. Senate. Alabama Senators Richard Shelby and Doug Jones stuck with their respective parties with Shelby voting yes and Jones voting no.
Barrett was confirmed by a 52-48 vote mainly along party lines with only Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine crossing over to vote no with the Democrats.
Barrett wowed most observers with her knowledge of the law during the confirmation hearings, but with just eight days before the presidential election, her nomination drew the ire of Democrats.
She becomes the youngest Justice in history and the third appointed to the high court by President Donald Trump.
Barrett is expected to be sworn in on Monday night by Justice Clarence Thomas. She is expected to begin hearing cases as early as tomorrow.
