HOOVER — Hewitt-Trussville opened up postseason play with a win on Wednesday night.
Senior Jenna Lord connected with the go-ahead home run in the fourth, freshman Sara Phillips struck out seven in a complete game and the top-ranked Huskies squeezed past Vestavia Hills 2-1 in the first round of the Class 7A, Area 6 tournament at Spain Park.
Lord also doubled home a run to tie things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Shortstop Kenleigh Cahalan matched Lord with two hits, accounting for all four of Hewitt-Trussville’s total hits. Vestavia Hills pitcher Charity Bibbs tossed all six frames to hold the Huskies (41-2-1) to their lowest run total since March 23 in a 1-0 win over Pleasant Valley.
2-seed Hewitt-Trussville will now take on tournament host Spain Park on Thursday for a berth in the area championship game and a guaranteed spot in next week’s regional tournament. The Jaguars advanced with a 3-2 win over 4-seed Oak Mountain.
