MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Department of Public Health reports that the number of Alabamians dead from COVID-19 has surpassed the state’s 2020 total.
With three months left in 2021, the state has recorded 7,205 deaths from COVID-19. In all of 2020, that number was 7,188.
However, there are signs that the extremely contagious Delta variant of the virus is slowing.
K-12 schools in Alabama have seen a sharp decrease in positive cases of the virus. Last week, there were 3,802 reported positive cases in K-12 schools in the state. This week, that number is 2,487, a decrease of nearly 1,400 cases, according to the ADPH’s COVID-19 dashboard.
Earlier this week, Leeds City Schools announced that it would do away with its mask mandate. LCS had 6 total positive cases reported this week, while Trussville City Schools had 22. Jefferson County Schools had 126 positive cases and has extended its mask mandate, while St. Clair County had 50 positive cases.
