Hewitt-Trussville Middle School’s fifth and sixth grade Scholar Bowl team outpaced the field at a recent tournament at Wallace State Community College and brought home the championship.
The Hewitt Trussville Middle School sixth grade Scholars Bowl team was undefeated in five rounds of pool play against teams from all over the state,” Meriam said. “Then they vanquished Pizitz, Discovery, and Gadsden in single-elimination playoffs.”
The Huskies took down rivals and defending champions Gadsden in the final game to win. Teammembers are Bentley Buckelew, Christian Kirsch, Hayden Cremers, James Banks, Jack Morse, Mattox Burton, and Henry Hallman.
The HTMS team battled throughout the day to go undefeated and came out victorious over 36 teams from across the state, according to Meriam.
“For eight hours, they answered questions about geography, math, music, history, literature, and science,” Meriam said. “They know so much stuff! Bentley scored tons of individual points; as other players tired, he was more and more energized.”
Team captain Buckelew led the district in scoring.
“This was only the second year the program has been active,” Meriam said. “They had a fantastic season.”
The Huskies’ coach praised the group’s teamwork as a key to their success.
“Most points come from bonus questions, when four team members consult. Every player contributed to this achievement,” Meriam said. “Their teamwork and encouragement of one another warms my heart. As their coach, I could not be prouder.”
