CLAY — A 150-foot Verizon cell tower is coming to Clay.
The Clay City Council voted last week to amend its zoning ordinance, allowing telecommunications towers to “more easily” be placed in city limits near residential zones, according to City Manager Ronnie Dixon.
The tower will be located behind the strip mall near the Steeplechase subdivision on some “unbuildable” property, Dixon said. The address is 6020 Steeplechase Drive.
The Clay Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the move to the city council. The Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing on the matter Jan. 15. A letter to the city from Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC on Dec. 12, 2014 states that the tower was being requested “in order to help improve the coverage and capacity issues due to increased traffic around this area.”
Steeplechase Homeowners Association President Dennis Locke said he hadn’t heard of any residents having issues with the tower being constructed.
A 190-foot cell tower was recently constructed at 6150 Deerfoot Parkway in Trussville to fill a gap in coverage in the Deerfoot Parkway area.
