The Cahaba River Society is hosting a roadside clean up on Grants Mill Road Friday, March 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. at the Grants Mill Cahaba River access parking lot, approximately 1.1 miles east of the bridge over I-459.
T-shirts, sponsored by Tom Williams Automotive Group, will be provided to the first 50 participants. Participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, work gloves, and to wear sturdy shoes!
The event is spearheaded and coordinated by the Alabama Clean Water Partnership in conjunction with Alabama PALS, APCO Renew Our Rivers. Cahaba River Society, City of Birmingham, City of Irondale, City of Vestavia, EBSCO, Jefferson County Commission, Jefferson County Department of Health, Keep Birmingham Beautiful, and the St. Vincent’s Orthopedic Cycling Team. Law enforcement from the participating jurisdictions will provide traffic control to keep volunteers safe during the cleanup.
Grants Mill Road is a heavily traveled thoroughfare through the Upper Cahaba River Watershed. Anything that is dropped, blown, spilled or otherwise placed along roadways can be a safety issue for drivers as well as affect water quality in the watershed and river itself. Since much of Grants Mill Road is narrow and winding with few homes or businesses, it is a hot spot for the illegal disposal of litter and trash. All litter and trash not removed from roadways eventually is carried by rainwater directly into the river or through its tributaries. Volunteer roadside cleanups not only remove much of this litter before it enters waterways but also help bring about public awareness of the problems littering causes.
