From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
TRUSSVILLE –Easter Day comes with many traditions. A family dinner with an Easter ham, a visit from the Easter bunny followed by an Easter egg hunt are all part of the day for many families.
But for Christians, the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ following His crucifixion three days earlier is the central, overriding focus of the day.
For over 40 years, even before there was a funeral home at the location, people have gathered at Jefferson Memorial Gardens on U.S. Highway 11 in Trussville to celebrate the resurrection at the annual Sunrise Service. It would be hard to find a more appropriate location for such a remembrance.
“The idea for the service was pretty much a development from the crosses in the cemetery,” Adam Seal said. “After they were put up, the cemetery staff at the time talked about how fitting of a place it was to celebrate the resurrection of Christ and then Sunrise Service was started.”
Over the years, the event has evolved into family tradition for many. The service, which usually last for about 45 minutes, includes a message from a local minister and select inspirational music.
As visitors arrive, they are greeted by musicians playing and hot coffee and snacks. The service begins promptly at 6:30 a.m., so arriving early is recommended.
Though the theme of Easter never changes, the music varies from year to year and has even included guests from the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in the past.
“I really enjoy arriving to see the sash (on the cross) has changed,” Seal said. “When you pull up in the early hours on Easter and see the white sash on the cross, it is hard not to get that feeling in you heart to how truly meaningful this day is. When the sun rises and the first beam of light hits, it really is a magical moment.”
This year’s service will include a message delivered by Eddie Adams with vocals by Tessa Kirk and music by Connie Smith.
