TRUSSVILLE – From the Disney adaptation, to “Snow White and the Huntsman,” to “Sydney White,” to “Mirror Mirror “even to the original Grimm’s Fairytale, this story has seen its fair share of adaptations, but the upcoming ACTA production of Snow White is sure to be the fairest of them all.
Director of the production Lucy Lunsford said the ACTA Board votes in advance of the upcoming season on what the productions would be, and they tend to lead towards a more kid friendly show in the fall.
Once the board selects the production schedule, anyone who’d like to throw their hat in the ring to direct is able to do so, and directors are selected from there.
“It’s just a fairy tale and there are so many fun things you can do with that,” Lunsford said. “It’s fun getting costumes and the set together, and making the magic come together on stage.”
Auditions were held the first Monday and Tuesday of August, cast selections were made on Friday and the following Monday rehearsals began. Lunsford said the cast began with read throughs and blocking, and then have progressively added set pieces, props and costumes. In two weeks’ time, technical rehearsals will begin, which includes the full set, props, lighting, sound and costume that patrons will see during the production.
With so many adaptions of Snow White, Lunsford said this version brings in more elements of Grimm’s Fairytale. She described the dwarves in the production as having similarities to dwarves from “Lord of the Rings” or the “Chronicles of Narnia,” with long beards and hair.
“Snow White kind of grows up with the dwarves, so you see more of her being raised by seven men, she doesn’t quite know how to be a lady,” Lunsford said. “She was a princess when she was little, but growing up she’s struggling to find herself.”
Lunsford also said action plays a larger role in this production than many others, with a fair share of sword fights.
From casting a show filled with 35 actors and designing the set, Lunsford said the most rewarding part of directing the show has been watching her vision come together.
“It’s been great to see it all come together, what was in my mind getting these random people from auditions and seeing them come together as a family,” Lunsford said.
Snow White runs September 30-October 9. Shows on Fridays and Saturdays begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday shows begin at 2:30 p.m.
Adult tickets are $12, students/children are $8 and seniors ages 60 and above are $10. Reservations can be made by calling the ACTA box office at 205-655-3902.
