From Trussville Tribune staff reports
Officials of a Mississippi school named after Confederate president Jefferson Davis plan to change the school’s title to one commemorating the former president of the United States.
Davis Magnet IB in Jackson, Miss. will be renamed Barack Obama Magnet IB starting with the 2018-2019 school year.
The student body of the school named after the confederate president during the Civil War is 98 percent black.
The decision to change the name was made following a vote on Tuesday by the school’s Parent-Teacher association.
The school is not the first to be named after the 44th president. More than a dozen other schools across the country are named after the former commander-in-chief, mostly educational institutions with a large minority population among its students.

What is controversial about a PTA vote?

98% black! That is discrimination! Whites, hispanics, etc, Muslim & others should be bussed in just like predominately white schools are required to do. The parents of this school are idiots! They have no idea the damage Obama did to them. All they see is black. Unfortunate they have blinders on their eyes.

When did America become so hateful?

He never was able to produce a birth certificate. Something simple to do, but he only produced some copy of a copy that was edited.
Wesley Fitzpatrick
Melissa, when you have a school that wants to be renamed to a miserable failure of a president, there’s a negative reaction.
Charles Walden
stupid

Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederate States. You know how his presidency went, right?

I was talking about the way people talk to each other. People seem to have forgotten how to disagree with each other with intelligence and class.

This is so depressing. So much hate. However, the moron comment is amusing.

Scott wouldn’t it make more sense though, to maybe rename the school after a GOOD president? They would have done better just leaving it alone.

Lori Leopard, I know! The comments under just about anything you find on Facebook is so disheartening! People are so vicious to each other! Has it always been like this and social media is just a public platform? Or is social media and the ability to hide behind a computer changing people?
Perry Leopard
Hang in there, Mark!
Perry Leopard
Scott and Lori, too.

Wesley, that’s a fair question. For starters, I would say the “good president-bad president” moniker is very subjective and dependent on the individual making the judgement. If “good president” is an argument, in my view, I would ask how in the world was Jefferson Davis’ name ever put on the building to begin with?
I’m not a big believer in eradicating names and monuments due to history. Because history never stops, I think a better idea is to continue to tell the story by adding more monuments and names that update our historical progress.
Above all, I think logic and reason should rule the day.
How unreasonable does a person have to be to think a school made of of children who are 98% black should bear the name of a man who didn’t believe black people were fully human? A man who fought to keep their ancestors enslaved. Logical people would ask, does the name on the building represent anything those children would aspire to be? Reasonable people would answer no.
Whether I consider Obama a good or bad president is of no consequence. I am exceedingly proud to live in a country that could elect a man of African American descent to the presidency.
Any logical and reasonable person should be able to see that the name of Barack Obama is more appropriate and inspiring to a student body which is made up of 98% black children than the name of Jefferson Davis. In my opinion, no one in the discussion matters more than the children attending the school.
Nicholas Lemonds
So, how many times do y’all go to church, post Bible quotes, pray on Facebook? If you have time to get this upset about a school neither you nor your kids attend, you do not have enough to do in life.

This % shouldn’t surprise anyone…Jackson (downtown) has been largely minority for 25 years or more. I KNOW it was when I lived in Vicksburg 25 years ago.

I went to Lee in Huntsville. Same issue there. They demolished and rebuilt the school several years ago and there was a group that wanted to change the name when it was rebuilt. I believe the solution was a “dual named” school. If I remember correctly it’s Lee/New Century High School. I read something a few months back where a group want to rename it after the first african-american to integrate the school. It would become Paulette R Turner high and the General mascot would become the Trail blazers.
The petition stated that Turner was someone who all people could admire, not just the white segment.
Tommy Dodson
Yeah hang in there or you may have to find a safe place

I don’t like Obama or agree with his policies, but I’m perfectly fine with this. What makes more sense, for an American high school to be named for an American president or named for the president of a country that ceased to exist 150 years ago (under said president’s watch I might add)?

I don’t think public buildings or streets, etc should be named after people.
John Morse
Barack Obama was 17 years old when President Carter pardoned Jefferson Davis for treason and restored his citizenship.
John Morse
Describe this “damage”, please.
Jinx Stromburg
Wow, good on you, Jackson, Mississippi!!
John Morse
Also, Obama may be related to Davis. The mother-in-law of Christopher Columbus Clark, his great-great-grandfather, was “rumored” to have been a second cousin of Jefferson Davis.
Barbara Sims
Totally disgusting. Then it is just going to be full of _____ just like its vile presidential person was. Boooo
David J Cousins
Great news.
Mike Jay
Maybe we can change Jefferson County to Obama County…
