HOOVER –Hoover police said they have made an arrest in an assault case after the suspect posted a video to Facebook of himself attacking a store clerk.
On Thursday, November 2, police said Deveniko Sharthy Whigham, 19, or Fairfield, attempted to return an item he purchased from a kiosk inside the Riverchase Galleria. A verbal dispute began after the clerk refused to refund the purchase.
An associate of the suspect began recording the incident on a cellphone. The dispute turned physical when the suspect reached across the counter and struck the victim in the face with a closed fist.
A still image of the suspect striking the victim was posted to the suspect’s Facebook account with a promise to upload a video of the incident if the picture got 20 likes. The suspect then posted a video of the incident.
The caption added to the photo read, “When they say it’s real but turn out it’s fake.”
Detectives were made aware of the suspect’s posts and were able to use them to identify him. The suspect was arrested today after being charged with the following:
