BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police detectives are conducting a homicide investigation after it was originally classified as an assault.
On Thursday, July 5, at 10:34 p.m., officers from the East Precinct responded to the 100 block of Oporto-Madrid Boulevard South on a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers observed that the victim, Spencer Burch, 63, was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to U.A.B. Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue and listed in critical condition.
On Saturday, July 7, the Birmingham Police Department received information Burch had died at 2:45 pm.
The victim was driving a white van at the time of the shooting. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
