TRUSSVILLE – The Trussville City Council met on Tuesday, August 14 and approved a light agenda which included a proclamation declaring next month as Pediatric Cancer Awareness month.
Among those in attendance included McKenzie Ward, who is this year’s winner of Miss Trussville’s Outstanding Teen. Ward lead the invocation in the Council’s regular meeting.
Councilor Zack Steele shared the city’s proclamation.
“According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 12,100 children under the age of 15 diagnosed with cancer this year,” read Steele. “There will be an estimated 1,340 deaths from pediatric cancer this year. Because of major treatment advances in recent decades, about 80% of children with cancer now survive five years or more.”
“Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month offers Alabamians the opportunity to remember the young lives taken too soon, honor the survivors and celebrate progress made in treatment and recovery. Therefore, the Mayor and City Council do hereby proclaim September 2018 as Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.”
Ward, a junior at Hewitt-Trussville High School, explained that her pageant platform is geared to raising awareness of childhood cancer through Dancers Fighting Cancer, an organization that has a mission to encourage the dance community while raising awareness of childhood cancer.
Ward explains that the City’s Proclamation means to her and her platform as Miss Trussville’s Outstanding Teen.
“Ever since my first visit to the pediatric oncology unit at Children’s Hospital, I have had a passion for the fighters, the survivors and their families,” said Ward. “For over eight years I have focused on supporting the families and fundraising. I am thankful to the Mayor and Council for their support of Pediatric Cancer Awareness month. I believe this is the first step in raising the much-needed funds for pediatric cancer research.”
