HOOVER — Hewitt-Trussville High School’s Stone Shelnutt captured three of five events held at the first day of the 56th AHSAA State Decathlon Championships being held at Hoover High School Football Stadium Monday. And Kelsey White of Baker captured two of the four events completed in the girls’ 47th Heptathlon Championships.
Shelnutt finished the first day with 3,594 points, giving him a 168-point lead over Bob Jones’ John Murray, who ranked second after Monday’s competition. Shelnutt won the 100-meter dash with a state decathlon record 10.88 time. He also captured the long jump with a leap of 22-01 and won the 400-meter dash in 49.52 seconds. Murray, who had 3,426 points, tied with Baynes Autrey of Mountain Brook to win the high jump competition. Both cleared 6-03.50. Autrey stood in third place after Monday’s five events with 3,356 points. The decathlon will conclude Tuesday with the five remaining events including the 110-meter hurdles, discus, javelin, pole vault and 1,500-meter run.
White won the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.71 time and the 200 clocking 25.89 seconds to collect 2,761 points and a 327-point lead over Audriana Blakely of James Clemens, who totaled 2,434 points. Mountain Brook’s Grayson Scott ranked fourth after the first day with 2,377 points, won the high jump with a 5-4.5 jump. Falkville’s Kari Watts won the shot put competition with a throw of 31-02.
The Heptathlon has three events remaining Tuesday, the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.
