Velma’s Planning on Moving to Another Location
By Tina Tidmore
Frances Salumn, who owns Velma’s Place, said she has three other locations she is considering. “It ain’t over yet,” said Salumn.
The main place she is considering is the former Tipsy’s just down the street from the current Velma’s location.
Salumn would need to get an alcohol license from Birmingham, but she has already been in conversation with the state ABC Board. She said that based on that conversation and her record, she feels she will not have a problem with the alcohol license.
The other two places she is considering are in Trussville, which means she could transfer the license in that case, she said.
Salumn said she will know by Aug. 13 if she will move to the former Tipsy’s location. “I’m pretty confident it’s going to work out,” said Salumn. Velma’s must vacate the current location by Aug. 17.
As news of the change is spreading, many are coming to Velma’s to share stories of their own history of good times at a bar that has been in existence since 1938, Salumn said.
On July 28, a group from Gadsden, who comes every few months, will be at Velma’s again
. On July 29, Salumn will be celebrating her birthday at Velma’s from 5 p.m.-2 a.m. She said that the public is invited to come.
