PINSON — Despite some issues with the power, delaying the start of the Pinson Valley and McAdory game Friday night, the Indians got plenty of electricity from running back Khymel Chaverst. The junior ball carrier ran for 183 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Indians to a 15-8 win at home.
Penalties and turnovers marred an otherwise stellar contest between the two Class 6A non-region opponents. The two teams combined for more than 20 penalties and six turnovers.
“I think we’ll learn from the game situations and correct that. We’ll be good,” Pinson Valley head coach Matt Glover said of the penalties.
The Indians struck first in the second quarter with a solid drive, ending in a touchdown from Chaverst. The drive covered 65 yards in eight plays. The extra point snap was mishandled, however and the conversion was unsuccessful.
Later in the quarter, McAdory answered with an 83-yard strike from Auburn commit Malcom Askew to Willie Stokes. The completion was the only one of the half for Askew. McAdory also mishandled their extra point snap, but were able to complete the 2-point conversion and to an 8-6 lead into the locker rooms.
Both defenses stood strong after the break and forced punts as well as turnovers.
With just less than six minutes remaining in the game, Pinson Valley kicker Saul Rios nailed a 33-yard field goal to put the Indians ahead for good 9-8.
Following a 3-and-out for the Yellow Jackets, Chaverst iced with with a 2-play, 61-yard drive that put the Indians up 15-8.
“(Chaverst) had to step in last year against McAdory. He learned a lot from that. He’s hard to see and he has a lot of good balance and good vision,” Glover said.
Pinson Valley travels to Ramsey next week in another non-region game.
