ARGO – The city of Argo made history Monday night after swearing in the first female mayor in the city’s history.
Mayor Betty Bradley has lived in Argo since 1998, and said she ran because she wanted to make a difference in her community.
“I saw some things that I felt like maybe with some extra work, we could make a difference, so I decided to throw my hat in and run,” Bradley said.
In addition to being the first female mayor, Bradley is also the first new mayor in 26 years.
“I think the change is going to be hard for some people,” Bradley said. “But we have a good group of council members that have given of their time to seat their position, and I feel like with everyone working together, we can accomplish a lot of things for the city.”
Tuesday will be Bradley’s first official day on the job, but her main focus is the same as many others in the city: the roadways.
“We’re going to have to work on getting new infrastructure in our city and find better ways to try to come up with the funding to do our roads and some of the things citizens need taken care of,” Bradley said.
Overall, Bradley said she’s excited to better the community, but also to set an example to other young women.
“I feel like sine I’m the first female mayor, it’s something that a lot of people can embrace because women haven’t been in that position, we don’t have a lot of female mayors,” Bradley said. “It makes women be a part of the work force, not just by helping a male but by showing they’re capable of doing it themselves, if they want to do it.”
