MONTGOMERY — The Senate race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones is getting much closer according to a poll from JMC Analytics, AL.com reports.
The new poll shows Jones leading with 46 percent of support to Moore’s 42 percent. According to the poll, which has a 4 percent margin of error, 9 percent of voters remain undecided.
Moore, whose victory was once thought of as extremely likely, has been the subject of a sex scandal this week; several women have come forward to allege that Roy Moore pursued relationships with them while they were teenagers and he was in his 30s; one woman said he initiated sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was 32.
The last Democrat to hold a Senate seat in U.S. Congress was Howell Heflin, who retired in 1997. (That’s not counting sitting Senator Richard Shelby, who was a Democrat early in his term before switching to the Republican Party in 1994.)
The Alabama Senate race will be held on Dec. 12.
