BIRMINGHAM — Police have opened a homicide investigation into the death of a man in east Birmingham, but they’re awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Birmingham Police Sergeant Johnny Williams said that the victim was discovered on Monday at approximately 4:20 pm.
Officers from the East Precinct responded to the 300 block of Oporto-Madrid Boulevard North to investigate a report of an accident. Officers arrived and located the victim unresponsive inside a vehicle. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and transported the victim to UAB Hospital for treatment. The victim was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
Although investigators received information that the victim may have suffered a gunshot wound earlier, they are still waiting to receive confirmation if the official cause of death was a result of the accident or possible gunshot wound, Williams said.
The victim’s identity will be released upon notification of immediate family.
No suspects are in custody. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
