The postseason honors keep coming for a former Pinson Valley pitcher.
Colby Wingard, a senior who graduated last month, was named a Class 5A all-state honorable mention pitcher by the Alabama Sports Writers Association earlier this month.
Wingard last month was named the Jefferson County Pitcher of the Year by the Jefferson County Baseball Coaches Association.
Wingard finished the 2013 season with a 10-1 record for a Pinson Valley team that reached the Class 5A semifinals. The Indians posted a 32-14 record.
“He was our workhorse,” said Pinson Valley head coach Shane Chappell, who was in his first season at the helm.
Wingard pitched in the big games for Pinson Valley, throwing a two-hit shutout against Class 6A runner-up Hewitt-Trussville and shutting out Class 5A No. 5 Southside-Gadsden in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
“Our guys had a lot of confidence in him and played really well behind him,” Chappell said.
No players from Class 6A runner-up Hewitt-Trussville (34-13) or Class 6A, Area 13 champion Clay-Chalkville (26-10) made the all-state squad.
No softball players from Hewitt-Trussville, Clay-Chalkville or Pinson Valley were named all-state players.
