The Daily Mountain Eagle is reporting that Carl Wright, 28, of Trussville was arrested by Sumiton police on Tuesday night and charged with one count of transmitting obscene materials to an underage child.
The article states that law enforcement officials believe there are at least eight additional victims and the number may grow from there.
Sumiton officials allege that Wright targeted young girls between the ages of 11 and 16 on the Internet and sent them obscene photos using social media accounts such as Facebook. Officers have seized all Wright’s computers and devices and are searching for additional victims, the newspaper reported.
According to the article, Wright formerly lived in Sipsey and was not known to the victims. A mother of one of the children saw the obscene photos and alerted officers. Officers believe Wright may have posed as a teenage boy to interact with the girls.
Sumiton officials told the Daily Mountain Eagle that there may be other young girls who had online conversations with Wright before deleting him after receiving obscene pictures and asked anyone with information to contact Sumiton Police at 205-648-3261.
According to the newspaper, Wright was captured using a “To Catch a Predator” type approach. He was arrested at his place of employment in Birmingham and is being held in the Walker County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.
