CLAY — Clay-Chalkville High School has its new band director.
Joel Henson was recently approved as the school’s band director, replacing the retiring Randall Wallace.
Henson has served as band director in the Jefferson County School District for more than 10 years, at Hueytown and Oak Grove high schools.
While at Oak Grove, Henson’s marching band was named Class A Champions at Bands of America Regional and Super Regional competitions five times. His marching, concert and jazz bands have consistently been rated superior throughout his career.
Henson said he’s “honored” to be named band director at Clay-Chalkville. He said he plans to build on the program’s “rich history and tradition of excellence” and bring a “new level of energy and excitement to the program.”
Henson said he welcomes the opportunity to work with Chris Walker, Erin McLaughlin and Nic Williams, a trio he calls “the best in the business.”
“Planning the halftime show is a top priority,” Henson said.
He said students and parents should keep a watch on the band’s Facebook page and band website www.thecougarband.org for that announcement and other important information throughout the summer.
Henson received both his degrees from the University of Alabama.
Henson and his wife, Malia, have two sons, Reggie and Brent.
