BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department reported Saturday that detectives are conducting a homicide investigation, stemming from an incident that occurred early Saturday morning in the 2400 block of 9th Court South.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending next of kin notifications.
Around 1 a.m., officers from the South Precinct were dispatched to the location on the call of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers observed a black male lying on the ground suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest area. The victim was pronounced deceased by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.
The department’s preliminary investigation revealed the victim was walking with a female associate when an unknown male approached them and allegedly shot the victim. The unknown person fled the scene on foot. It is unknown at this time why the victim was shot.
This is an ongoing homicide investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
