TRUSSVILLE — The City of Trussville resolved to supplement funds from the Alabama Department of Transportation and declared a 1994 fire truck as a surplus during a City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 24.
Mayor Gene Melton initially asked ALDOT for extra funding to offset costs for a project on Edward’s Lake Road. ALDOT originally agreed to grant the city $50,00, and later added $560,000 to the project. The decision to accept these funds was unanimously approved.
A 1994 fire truck was also declared a surplus. According to Trussville Fire Chief Russell Ledbetter, the fire department will most likely be getting rid of the truck. The decision was unanimously approved.
“It’s been a great piece of equipment for our fire department,” said Councilman Bryan Plant. “We’re very pleased that we were able to replace it.”
Councilman Buddy Choat reported that over 350 students participated in the track and field event hosted by Trussville Parks and Recreation.
“This is the first time we hosted the event. It ran smoothly, and everybody said it was probably the best statewide track and field event they have ever been to,” said Choat.
According to Choat, the Council is looking to reduce costs for the expansion of the Trussville Public Library.
Councilman Alan Taylor reported that the Hewitt-Trussville High School Baseball Team was recognized by the City for their state championship title. Taylor also proposed that track and field and wrestling state champions should also be recognized by the City in the future for their accomplishments.
Taylor also reported that Trussville Board of Education president Bill Roberts asked to not be considered for re-election during officer elections during a meeting on Monday, and Sid McNeil will be serving as president for the 2016-2017 academic year. Gayle Glenn will also be serving as the board’s vice-president.
“Schools are moving forward. I’m glad that Trussville has what we have,” said Taylor.
