BIRMINGHAM — A 17-year-old boy was shot to death today in downtown Birmingham, possibly during a robbery, according to Carol Robinson.
The police attempted life-saving techniques on him, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. The incident occurred on 2nd Ave. South at 18th Street, near Railroad Square office building, only blocks from Regions Field.
This comes one week after another 17-year-old, Juzharis Webb, was shot on his way home from Wenonah High School. WBRC reports the victim today was also a student at Wenonah High School.
Witnesses say they heard two gunshots, and police say he was shot in the chest.
Police told Robinson the victim set up a meeting with another person in the area, and they do not believe the shooting was random.
“We’re not sure who he came to meet. We know it was someone else in another car,” Lt. Sean Edwards said. “Some kind of altercation, some kind of engagement happened in the alley area.
“It’s obviously not a random shooting,” he said. “It’s obvious this was a meeting place for the individuals involved. We’re trying to find out what that meeting was about.”
Two of the victims’ friends were on the scene and were taken to police headquarters in order to determine the chain of events. Following being shot, the victim ran from an alley into the street where he collapsed, the story read.
“We’re trying to determine what led up to this,” Edwards said. “This is a very interesting location due to the fact that we have a lot of construction going on. We normally don’t have something of this nature here. To have an individual in the middle of the street definitely has us puzzled.”
He praised the officers who tried to save the victim, calling them “courageous.” “We salute our officers,” he said. “That’s what we’re called to do – save a life.”
This makes a seventh homicide victim this week for Birmingham, and 11 total in 2017.
Anyone with information about the deadly shooting is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
