BIRMINGHAM — The man who was shot and killed on Monday morning after he pulled over with car trouble has now been identified.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Shontez Deon Rhodes, 36, of Birmingham.
Rhodes was discovered on Monday, March 2, at approximately 1:14 a.m., according to Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin.
“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was having car trouble and exited his vehicle,” Mauldin said. “The suspect drove up in an unknown vehicle and a brief exchange of words occurred before the suspect opened fire shooting the victim.”
Officers from the West Precinct responded to a shot spotter call and citizens’ complaints of gunfire at Valley Road and Court I, according to Mauldin.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Rhodes on the ground outside of his vehicle. He was unresponsive and was suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue along with Jefferson County Coroner arrived and pronounced him deceased on the scene.
“There are no suspects in custody,” Mauldin said. “A motive has not been established in this homicide investigation. This is an ongoing investigation and additional details will be provided as they come available.”
