MONTGOMERY — Automobile insurers will disburse more than $100 million to 2 million Alabama policymakers following a decrease in accidents as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Kay Ivey announced on Friday.
Due to less people traveling on the roads, which in turn leads to less accidents, several auto insurers will give out an estimated combined total of $109,655,119 in returns to eligible Alabamians. The methods of distribution and eligibility will vary depending on the auto insurer; some will send out money while others will offer discounts and rebates.
“This is good news for Alabama insurance consumers,” Governor Ivey said. “I want to thank automobile insurance companies for stepping up to the plate during this difficult time and supporting their policyholders. Here in Alabama, the economic impact is greater than $100 million in payments returned to the pockets of consumers at a time when it is badly needed.”
I’m pleased to announce auto insurers are returning over $100 million in premium to AL policyholders during the ongoing #COVID19 crisis. “I am pleased that these insurance companies have taken this important step to help so many Alabama consumers.” Alabama Insurance Commissioner Jim Ridling said. “Many Alabamians are not driving as much right now because of Governor Ivey’s stay-at-home order and emergency declarations. Many consumers are working from home. It only makes sense to discount what consumers are paying for automobile insurance and to provide them some financial relief. I join Governor Ivey today in offering our sincerest thanks.”
