BIRMINGHAM — The Regions Tradition golf tournament has been canceled, according to several reports.
The Birmingham event was initially schedule to take place in May and then was delayed until September. Due to complications created by coronavirus, the 2020 tournament has now been canceled.
Regions Tradition is a tournament on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, a series of competitions held each year for golfers over the age of 50. The Tradition was first held in 1989 and is one of the five major golf tournaments on the Senior Circuit.
Regions took over as the event’s sponsor in 2010 and relocated the tournament to the Birmingham area beginning in 2011.
According to a 2015 report from the Alabama Newscenter, the annual golf tournament has an economic impact of between $20 million and $25 million each year it comes to Birmingham.
Event organizers say it will be back in May 2021.
