BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham police said a deadly shooting was the end result of an altercation at the Alabama State Fair over the weekend.
Investigators said after the altercation at the fair, those fighting met up at Elyton Village to finish the fight. That’s when shots were fired and police say two people were caught in the crossfire. One of them was 60-year-old Fannie Carter. She was pronounced dead on the scene. A 16-year-old boy was also shot and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Another person was also shot and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
No suspects are in custody.
Birmingham Police shut down the Alabama State Fair early on Saturday, Sept. 19, after the initial fight. Multiple police units responded to the fair, around 9:30 p.m. People at the fair said they saw people fighting and people running. One woman said her child was nearly trampled while her family tried to escape the chaos.
One video showed groups of people running and yelling. Another video showed police telling people to leave around 10 p.m. The fair was scheduled to stay open until 11 p.m.
The Alabama State Fair runs through Sept. 27, at the Birmingham Race Course.
