On Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020, Birmingham lost a very special man, Walter Stephen “Steve” Reggel, at the age of 74.
Steve was born to Walter G. A. Reggel and Madeline M. Reggel, of Huntington, W.V., both now deceased. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca C. Reggel, of Birmingham; son, Walter Erich Reggel, of Birmingham; and daughter, Kirstin R. Barr (Chris), of Rome, Ga. He is also survived by his sister, Sally R. Oakes (Richard), of Huntington, W.V., and Max the dog.
Steve was a graduate of Huntington High School (class of ’64) and Virginia Tech (class of ’69) with a mining engineer degree. Throughout his 30-year career at Drummond Co., he was called upon for his valuable knowledge and mechanical thinking. He also previously worked for 16 years at Tennessee Copper Company.
His personality touched many lives in many ways, from his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America as a child and as an adult, to square dancing both on a local and state level. He also enjoyed flying his “Cessna” airplane and driving his green, ’69 Roadrunner.
Steve leaves behind numerous friends on the engineering level and square dancing level. His sense of conversation would tell you that he had a versatile background in all subject matters. He had a sense of humor and quick temper, and a compulsion to take control of situations. He had a generous heart that longed to provide for his parents, his family, and even his friends.
Memorial services will be held at a later time, in concern for the health and safety of everyone throughout this pandemic. Friends and family will be notified when a memorial service has been scheduled. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Jimmie Hale Mission.
