LEEDS – The Leeds Board of Education met on Tuesday, March 10 to discuss activities for the coming summer season, as well as job positions that are available in the school system.
Chief School Financial Officer Ryan Miller gave the financial report saying that the system has received 48.79% of the general fund revenue and 83.29% of the local revenue. The system is still down as he reported in previous meetings but said that it is now catching up.
Superintendent John Moore said that a protestation that the owners of the Outlet Shops at Grand River have made about their valuation may be affecting the slight decrease in revenue. According to Moore, the owners have been protesting their valuation since 2016, which they believe should be higher at $18 million than what the Jefferson County Board of Equalization says should be at $16 ½ million.
Afterwards the board discussed summer activities with Moore saying that there will be a summer school for students struggling with grades. A job description will be advertised for teachers to help with summer school, which will pay $50 per hour.
Summer school will be held at the middle school for students in grades six through 12. Transportation and food will be provided to students and will not cost anything for parents.
“We are going to have a really busy summertime like we never had before,” Moore said.
There will be a summer feeding program that will be funded by COVID-19 relief money. The program will be held from June 7 to July 23. The program is open to those from three-years-old to young adults and do not have to be students in Leeds.
Moore said that it will be held at the middle school and possibly at the primary and elementary schools. No registration is necessary to receive meals.
Moore said that the summer activities are being funded by legislative and stimulus funds, which will also go into a literacy camp. This will be at the Leeds Primary School and is aimed at kids from kindergarten to the third grade.
In other business, the board will sell nine school busses after recently acquiring new ones. The old busses will be advertised for sale on govdeals.com. The board will also sell off surplus band instruments and replace with new ones using legislative funding.
The board will also advertise a job description for a psychometrist who will be responsible for testing children with special needs.
The next meeting of the Leeds Board of Education will be held on April 13 at the Leeds City Board of Education Building at 6 p.m. The building is located at 1517 Hurst Ave.
