ST. CLAIR COUNTY — Belhaven University basketball coach Jonathan Vines found what he was looking for in Steven “Bear” Black.
The St. Clair County High School senior recently graduated with a 3.91 GPA and is headed to Jackson, Miss. to play for Vines.
“Bear fits perfectly into our uptempo system as a guard with good decision making skills in the open court while also being able to control half court actions and make intelligent reads,” said Vines.
Vines also likes what Black offers above the shoulders.
“We were looking to up our overall basketball IQ in this class and Bear certainly helps with that,” he continued. “We also Wanted to bring in guys who play well out of the pick and roll action and who can shoot it. Bear fills both of those goals. We are excited to get him on campus and watch him mature and grow on the court, scholastically, socially and spiritually.”
The Blazers compete in the American Southwest Conference (Division III) and are looking to improve on last year’s 4-13 season.
