TRUSSVILLE — When Dr. Craig Mix moved from Canada to Trussville in 2003, he found more than a great location to open his chiropractic office, he found a new hometown.
“I came here and immediately just felt at home.” said Dr. Mix. “the Southern culture is amazing. The weather is warm, the people are warmer, grilling is an art, College football is a way of life and churches are on every corner. Plus we have beaches to the south and mountains to the north. It’s the perfect slice of paradise.”
It’s that hometown appeal that has drawn many people to the Trussville area and it’s how Dr. Mix wants his practice, Discover Chiropractic, to be known—as the hometown chiropractor.
“We’re right here in the heart of Trussville in this old house that was built in the 50s that we converted into a doctor’s office,” he said. The office is on South Chalkville Road just a few blocks away from the new entertainment district. “We’ve been serving Trussville since 1999 and are here to stay.”
The hometown vibe is what brought Dr. Peter Riddle back to Trussville to join the practice as well.
Dr. Riddle began working at Discover Chiropractic as a massage therapist and became so interested in the field that he went back to school in Atlanta to earn his Doctor of Chiropractic degree.
“Trussville practically raised me and now I get to give back to them,” said Riddle. “I grew up in Trussville, graduated from Trussville, and married a girl from Trussville,” he said. When he made the decision to go back to school, Dr. Mix recommended Life University in Atlanta.
“My wife is a flight attendant for Delta, she’s based out of Atlanta,” said Riddle. ‘When I finished school we decided it was time for us to start a family and I called Dr. Mix and said I was looking to set down some roots.”
Dr. Mix invited Riddle to join the practice, adding to the hometown connection and the family environment at the office.
“It’s been an incredible place to come into,” he said. “I’m able to learn from Dr. Mix. The family environment we have here—you can’t beat it.” Riddle says he enjoys connecting with old friends, many of whom are also starting families. He studied Advanced Pediatrics as part of his training and has brought his abilities to the practice to assist with pregnant moms, babies and small children.
Inside the building’s comfortable home-like exterior, you’ll find an office with some of the most advanced equipment in the field including a high definition digital x-ray machine and an Insight Discovery Subluxation Station (IDSS)—a device so advanced it was originally used by NASA to monitor the wellness of astronauts on space shuttle missions.
The IDSS, which isn’t available in most doctor’s offices, measures heart rate, muscle tone and organ performance and combines the results into a health score which makes it easy for the patients to understand—allowing the doctors to spend more quality time with each patient.
“The scanning device at Discover Chiropractic takes chiropractic care in Trussville to a whole new level. It is completely non-invasive and painless,” said Mix. “This advanced scanner uses sensors that monitor and combine heart rate variability, motor nerves, muscle asymmetry, and autonomic nerve function to give each patient a health score that is easy to understand. With this technology, we can help reveal the source of your pain, accurately measure your level of overall health, determine how much stress you are under and how effectively your body is coping with your stress. The scan results give us the information we need to customize your treatment and monitor your progress with successive re-examinations and scans,” he said.
Both doctors take special care to make patients feel comfortable, saying many people are surprised at how gentle the adjustments can really be. They also give special attention to new patients, educating them on the equipment, processes and treatment methods.
“Everybody is nervous when they first see a chiropractor. That’s normal,” said Mix. “We get to know them, we run some tests and learn what is really going on with them first before we decide to treat them,” he said.
Dr. Mix feels it is important for the patients to understand what is going on with their bodies. The first exam can take a full hour because the doctors sit with each patient and thoroughly explain the results of tests before the first treatment.
“We work closely with other doctors too and refer out when necessary,” said Mix. “We have a great reputation with orthopedic doctors and neurologists and we all work as a team to help the patient.”
Discover Chiropractic is open six days a week and is open for appointments or walk-in visits. They accept most major insurance and can have a payment plan for patients who prefer to pay cash or who don’t have insurance.
The doctors see a lot of room to grow along with the community and add more services to serve the people of Trussville. They like stress that chiropractic involves a lot more than working with the spine or dealing with back pain—it can benefit the entire body.
“Chiropractic is an important piece of the puzzle in being healthy,” said Mix. “In addition to watching what you eat and getting regular exercise, chiropractic care is equally important because it keeps your spine healthy which enables your body to move and function at its best.”
