ALABASTER — Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Riley Quick just threw a no-hitter.
Yeah, there’s a million things wrong with that lede. It uses first-person, it doesn’t give the score. It’s a gut reaction to an unusual happening. But here’s the thing: Hewitt-Trussville’s Riley Quick just threw his second no-hitter in as many starts, and the Huskies whipped Thompson 10-0.
Quick’s fastball was moving at 90-94 miles per hour according to the radar gun set up behind home plate, with his off-speed stuff coming in at 79-83 MPH
Those things are worth breaking a couple of journalistic rules for.
The game was never really in doubt. Hewitt-Trussville got off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jack Ollis tripled to start the game and Ethan Duhon drove him in.
Quick struck out eight after walking the first batter he faced. Once the senior standout found his location, though, he struck out the side in the first to end the inning. From there, the Huskies cruised.
Huskies’ catcher Matt Miller homered and drove in a pair of runs, while Brooks McRae matched him with a dinger and 2 RBIs of his own. Ollis had the triple and an RBI, while Duhon had two hits and 2 RBIs.
Quick helped his own cause with an RBI single, while Baker Green and Carson Wideman each added a hit for Hewitt-Trussville.
The Huskies host Wetumpka at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15.
