BIRMINGHAM — The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified an 80-year-old landlord who reportedly shot and killed a tenant and then took his own life last week.
Paul Edwin Vance, 80, of Alliance, shot himself when deputies arrived at a residence on the 1200 block of Alliance Road in Bessemer, according to a statement from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Joni Money. Deputies had been called to the scene after Vance reportedly shot and killed 57-year-old Raymond Earl Hamilton on May 5.
Deputies say Vance was on the front porch of the residence and shot himself as they approached him.
“The decedent sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound injury following the murder of another person,” Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Bill Yates stated in a report on Vance’s demise. “The death is being investigated as a suicide and, all questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the death should be made to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.”
Vance died the next day, succumbing to his injury at UAB Hospital.
