CENTER POINT — The Center Point City Council announced on Thursday, June 2, that the city’s previous trash pickup service “Waste Management” has officially stopped helping the city pick up trash and debris.
Resident Patricia Jameson questioned the council about her current bill with Waste Management and said she was told by the company that the city is now responsible for the pickup of old furniture, trees, and household items since the contract was discontinued.
“My question is, will the residents of Center Point be billed for that? Or how will that be offsetting with the bill that we are paying now?” Jameson said.
Mayor Scott told Jameson that the city is currently negotiating with Waste Management about rates, and Scott confirmed to Jameson that it was accurate that the city would be responsible for keeping the city clean.
“The city is taking on the responsibility of picking up the debris and the trash. We are working on it. It’s a lot of houses; it’s a lot, as you can see, all over the place, so we are working as fast as we can to get everything picked up,” Scott said.
Scott also mentioned to the public that one of the trucks used for trash pickup is currently out of service and will be back in service by next week. Scott added there is only one truck picking up trash and debris daily right now.
The council confirmed that the contract with Waste Management terminated in April and that they were considering being partners with Birmingham’s Eastern Tree Service for now.
The council agreed to allow Birmingham’s Eastern Tree Service to clean the streets of debris and trash twice a week up until the city is in a better condition and not excessively filled with trash.
The next council meeting is on June 16.
The council approved these items on the consent agenda:
- Indemnity Agreement with Food Giant Shopping Center RE: 20th Year Celebration
- The council approved this agreement to allow the city’s residents to park within the shopping center parking lot and to allow a shuttle bus for the city’s 20th-year celebration event held on June 17.
- Agreement with ALDOT for additional lighting
- The council approved this agreement with ALDOT because the council felt Center Point Parkway needed more lighting at night.
- Resolution Authorizing Funds for a Diversity & Inclusion Event
- The council approved this resolution to support and bring awareness to current citizens and future residents of the LGBT community who will and are living in Center Point. The resolution authorizes funds for a diversity and inclusion event that will be held on June 11.
