TRUSSVILLE — As temperatures continue to increase in our area, Trussville Police Department (TPD) reminds the public to practice heat safety to protect themselves and others.
According to TPD Facebook Page, heat-related deaths are preventable.
They provided tips to protect yourself and others:
- Job Sites: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible.
- Indoors: Check up on the elderly, sick, and those with air conditioning.
- Vehicles: Never leave kids or pets unattended – Look before you Lock.
- Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade, and stay hydrated.
TPD also shared the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Heat exhaustion:
- faint or dizzy;
- excessive sweating;
- cool, pale, clammy skin;
- nausea or vomiting;
- rapid, weak pulse; and
- muscle cramps.
TIPS: Get to a cooler, air-conditioned place. Drink water if fully conscious. Take a cool shower or use cold compresses.
Heat stroke:
- throbbing headache;
- no sweating;
- body temperature above 103 degrees;
- red, hot, dry skin;
- nausea or vomiting;
- rapid, strong pulse; and
- may lose consciousness.
TIPS: Call 911. Take immediate action to cool the person until help arrives.
