BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) is investigating a double homicide that occurred on Thursday, Dec. 8, at approximately 8:30 p.m.
According to the BPD, Timmeric Leshawn Bryant, 22, of Birmingham, and Tobias Estrada McKinstry, 38, of Center Point, sustained gunshot wound injuries during a reported assault in the 8300 block of 1st Avenue North in Birmingham.
A shot spotter notification alerted shots had been fired, and community members also called 9-1-1 to advise someone had been shot at the location.
“Upon arrival, East Precinct officers observed two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds,” Sergeant Monica Law stated.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene and pronounced McKinstry dead. Bryant was transported to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The victims will be identified upon notification to the next of kin.
“We have a person of interest detained; however, we believe there is at least another suspect,” Law stated.

These are Birmingham’s 127th and 128th murder investigations of 2022, with eight justifiable death investigations.
