MOODY — A meeting about the environmental landfill fire in Moody will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 10 a.m. at the Pell City Court House.
There are three items on the agenda for the upcoming meeting:
- An executive session to discuss litigation and the details on what exactly the county has the authority to do;
- Approving a resolution to declare the existence of an emergency; and
- Any further action to address the emergency conditions.
Statement from EMA Director Patrice Kurzejeski:
“St Clair County EMA and your County Commissioner Chairman, Stan Batemon, have visited the site many times. St Clair County does realize and empathize with you and your family concerning your living conditions. Please know efforts from your local County Commission, State Senator/Representative, and Federal Senators/Representatives to identify a solution to this fire have not ceased. We have been working on this since the first day it was apparent that the landfill would continue to burn. I am sure you have heard our hands were tied due to the landfill being private property. But, with the continued push from your elected officials, we may be closer to a resolution very soon. Please continue to monitor social media and local news for updates.”
The Moody Fire Department will no longer be the point of contact for the fire at the environmental landfill (1317 Annie Lee Rd).
According to the MFD Facebook page, the department initially responded to this incident in cooperation with Alabama Forestry.

“Along with other departments in the area, Moody assisted with a plan of containment for this incident,” the MFD Facebook page stated. “The objectives of that plan were to prevent injury, loss of life, and loss of residential property from the incident, and that plan was successful.”
MFD stated that from that point, Moody Fire has been monitoring the site and will continue to do so.
