BIRMINGHAM — A Birmingham Police Department (BPD) officer has been injured after an SUV crashed into a BPD patrol car on I-65 North on Friday, Oct. 20.
Just after midnight, two North Precinct officers in separate patrol cars were blocking traffic for a disabled vehicle on I-65 North just before the Daniel Payne Drive exit when an SUV crashed into one of the officer’s patrol cars. The other officer on scene was inside his own patrol car.
The non-injured officer radioed in the incident. Birmingham Fire and Rescue (BFR) personnel arrived on the scene and then assessed both the driver of the SUV and the injured patrol officer.
BFR transported the injured patrol officer to a local area hospital. The officer is reported to have suffered a concussion and additional head and neck injuries. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
Officers took the driver of the SUV into custody under the suspicion he was Driving Under the Influence. Officers then transported the driver to the Birmingham City Jail where he was booked in for D.U.I.
