“WHEREAS, the City of Trussville recognizes that our freedom is not free, and that many members of our military have proudly served our nation, some returning to dedicate themselves to their families and community, some bearing the scars of battle, and some having paid the ultimate price of their lives that we might live in a land of liberty,” the proclamation states, “and WHEREAS, the non-profit Wreaths Across America organization has set a lofty goal of placing a wreath on the grave of every military veteran in the United States in recognition of their military service, and endeavors to speak the name of each person as the wreath is laid, that their name and their service not be forgotten; and …
“WHEREAS, Wreaths Across America Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in December each year, falling this year on December 16, 2023; and …
“WHEREAS, American Legion SSG Michael W. Hosey Post 205 is the Wreaths Across America sponsor in the Trussville area, and will assist in the laying of wreaths on the graves of veterans here in Trussville, including the five Killed in Action from recent wars; and …
“WHEREAS, the City of Trussville supports this noble cause, and encourages our citizens and our businesses to contribute to this endeavor as an act of respect and appreciation of our military men and women.
“NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the City Council of the City of Trussville, Alabama that December 16th, 2023 shall be and is proclaimed Wreaths Across America Day.”
In other business, the city approved:
- Ordinance 2023-027-ADM, renaming Chalkville Road to Chalkville Mountain Road and re-establishing its point of beginning
- Ordinance 2023-025-PZ, rezoning 6287 Service Road to A-1 (Agricultural) from R-4 (Single Family & Duplex Residential)
- Ordinance 2023-026-PZ, rezoning 5998 Deerfoot Parkway to C-1 (Preferred Commercial) from IN-1 (Institutional)
- Resolution 2023-89, abolishing the City Telecommunications and Technology Committee
- Resolution 2023-90, declaring city property surplus and approving an amended real estate purchase agreement, per Resolution No. 2023-88
- Resolution 2023-91, amending Resolution No. 2023-78 with up to $3 Million SEEDS Act Grant Matching Funds
Counselor Lisa Bright offered Resolution 2023-91, explaining that Resolution No. 2023-78 had been approved by the council a few weeks ago in order to engage in writing the SEEDS Act Grant, which stands for Site Evaluation Economic Development Strategy.
“This is part of our Glendale development,” Mayor Buddy Choat said. “We approved a contract with Sain Associates to help us apply for this grant; it is a matching grant. We don’t know how much it’s going to be but $3 million would be what it would take if we were awarded $6 million worth of grant. We would have to pay three and would get three. … We’re already over $4 million right now in our guesstimates, and maybe to five, so we went ahead and upped it to $6 million just in case.”
The next meeting of the Trussville City Council will be Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023, immediately following a 5 p.m. workshop.
